Luckily for you, I’m a student who’s used MyMathLab for multiple years, and I can give you the insider info on all the good and bad from a student’s point-of-view.

If you want more than just the pros and cons of MyMathLab, then rest easy. We already have a full MyMathLab review written from a student’s perspective.

Let’s dive into the good and the bad of Pearson’s MyMathLab.

The pros of MyMathLab

MyMathLab has many great things to provide students, and I’ve always found it to be a valuable tool when studying.

Homework helpers

One of the primary reasons for this is the tools that MyMathLab makes available to you when doing homework.

You’ll be able to:

  • Walkthrough problems step by step with detailed explanations
  • Watch relevant lecture videos
  • Have immediate access to the relevant portions of the textbook
  • Quickly contact your teacher about specific problems and get help

With great tools like these, it’s easy to see that MyMathLab does everything it can to give us students the edge when chugging through homework.

eText

Another fantastic aspect of MyMathLab is the eText mentioned above. There’s no need to carry around a textbook with MyMathLab. You can also access the eText on a smartphone, tablet, or PC. All you need is an internet connection.

Being able to study or look up a concept on the fly has saved me on multiple occasions during my time as a student.

Organization

If you’re a disorganized student like I was, then MyMathlab is a real time saver. The software quickly helps you keep track of all your assignments.

It’ll even display an overall course grade and upcoming schedule where you can see how you’re performing and what’s due immediately. No more wondering and hoping you don’t miss a deadline!

Study tools

One of the best things about MyMathLab is the study tools it provides you. Pearson has tried to make studying and note-taking as easy as possible.

With MyMathLab, you get study plans based on the content from your textbook, guided notes, and lecture videos that you can easily follow along with.

If you’re one of those students who hates studying because you don’t know where to start or how to be effective, then MyMathLab has your back.

The cons of MyMathLab

Well, MyMathLab sounds excellent so far, but we’ll have to face the music eventually. It can’t be all good. Like anything, there are some downsides.

Are you paying for….homework?

One of my biggest gripes with MyMathLab was that I was paying for the ability to do my homework. If you don’t purchase the software, you don’t get to do your homework.

That’s a problem.

You also won’t get the textbook since the eText is built into the software. This package deal means those of you who are savvy textbook deal finders, are out of luck this time.

Not only are you buying the textbook, but you’re buying your assignments too. It never sat right with me as a student.

Answering System

For the most part, the answering system is a small pro. It gives you helpful feedback when something goes wrong.

But, sometimes….

If you look closely, I used the wrong ‘x’ character for scientific notation. So the issue here is that the answering system doesn’t give you much wiggle room. You have to make sure you’re exact, even with special characters.

Also, now and then the problem won’t clearly state to what decimal points you should be answering, or when you need to be rounding.

Albeit this is a rare occasion, and most of the time, the system works fine. But now and then, things like this can happen.

Conclusion

Now you know, from a student who’s used the software for years, what the good and bad aspects of MyMathLab are.

As a final statement on the matter, there’s way more good than bad. The software made trekking through math classes much easier for me with all the tools it provided.

We hope you use this information to make an informed decision on whether or not this is something you’re ready to implement into your student career.
