Verifying your Android device’s compatibility with Mint Mobile
If you brought your own device to Mint Mobile, hopefully, you already established that your Android device works with Mint. If you haven’t done so, you can check your phone’s compatibility here.
Here are Mint Mobile’s criteria for Android phones:
If you must ask your carrier to unlock your phone, you will have to make sure of the following:
- That you don’t owe any money on your phone
- That you do not owe any money to the carrier for past service
- That doing so will not violate bylaws under your carrier agreement
Even though carriers are legally obligated to unlock your Android device once you’ve paid it off, they may still quote some obscure reason for refusing to do so. This response is rare, but it does happen with some carriers.
If your carrier (or former carrier) still refuses to unlock your phone, then you can choose from several different Youtube videos that will show you how to unlock the phone yourself.
How do SIM cards work?
When your Mint SIM kit arrives in the mail, it will come with a set of instructions for your Android device. Follow the instructions for installation and wait for a text from Mint.
The text will tell you your next steps for updating your Android data settings. In a matter of seconds, your phone should be good to go.
What if you can’t find your SIM card slot?
Every Android device is different. As such, you should consult your phone’s user manual if you cannot find the card slot. Google your phone’s make and model, and you will find an online user manual that can show you where your SIM card slot is.
Manual Mint Mobile setup for Android devices
If your data is malfunctioning even though you’ve installed the SIM card correctly, you may need to adjust a few settings yourself.
The problem is most likely your Android access point name (APN) inside your phone’s settings. You can follow these steps to adjust your Android APN settings to be compatible with Mint Mobile.
- Swipe from the top of your device to access your device tools.
- Select “Settings.”
- Scroll until you see the “Network Connections” menu.
- Select “More Networks.”
- If it is not already, enable your “Mobile Data.”
- Select “Access Point Name/APN.”
- You’re going to be adding a new Mint Mobile APN. To do this, first select the plus icon.
- Add in the following fields, as displayed below.
9. Save the new APN.
10.Back out to “Access Point Name/APN.”
11. Confirm that you have selected the new Mint Mobile APN and then restart your phone.
Text “SETUP” to 6700
If you notice your phone’s data speeds to be unusually sluggish (or not working at all), it may be that Mint Mobile updated their APN settings. While Mint Mobile usually does an excellent job of keeping their devices updated, some older phones may not automatically update to the most recent settings.
Should this happen to you, text “SETUP” to 6700, and Mint will send you the latest APN settings so that you can update your phone manually.
