If You’re Not Buying in Bulk, You’re Doing it Wrong

Trickut - How to Choose the Right Mint Mobile Plan - review

Let’s talk about Mint Mobile plans.

If you’re like me, you likely have a lot of questions about the “$15 a month” wireless service that’s making waves on the Internet right now.

I’ll keep it simple; Mint Mobile’s coverage is as good as it is affordable. That said, some Mint Mobile plans may be a better option for you than others.

Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile is one of the most compelling prepaid wireless options on the market. Mint Mobile is worth switching to.

Don’t worry; I’ve read all the fine print, so you don’t have to. Here’s everything you need to know about the world’s cheapest cell phone plan.

Are you paying too much for your cell phone bill?

You’ve probably figured this out already, but wireless plans are pricey.

Today’s smartphones and streaming apps undoubtedly run up your data usage, but the average person still spends over $100 on their monthly cell phone plan.

The Senior Vice President of Marketing and Creative at Mint Mobile, Aron North, says this is too much.

North explains to listeners on the #TalkingTech podcast that it doesn’t make sense for consumers to pay extra for an unlimited plan. In fact, most people average just 5 GB of data usage before adding WiFi.

It’s true – I checked mine, and I only averaged 4.63 GB per month over the last three months, but I’m still paying $90 for my big mobile unlimited plan.

I can get the same service that fits my data usage for only $20 a month at Mint Mobile – that would save me $840 in a single year!

What is Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile is a prepaid wireless carrier that runs over the top of the T-Mobile network, but this doesn’t mean that users have to worry about subpar coverage.

The fact that Mint leases its network from an established carrier means that Mint Mobile bands use the same frequencies that T-Mobile uses.

In a nutshell, Mint Mobile coverage gives users the exact same service as T-Mobile customers. No, really, there’s no difference!

The idea behind Mint Mobile’s bulk wireless plans is simple; the more months you buy in advance, the more you can save.

That said, the sheer number of options Mint has on their website can get confusing – where do you start?

Here’s how it works:

  1. BYOP (bring your own phone) or shop Mint Mobile phones.
  2. Determine your wireless data needs from 3 GB, 8 GB, and 12 GB.
  3. Decide how many months you want to prepay from 3 months, six months, and 12 months.

It’s that easy! Once you’ve purchased your Mint Mobile plan, you will receive a free Mint Mobile SIM card to use with your device in the mail.

Keep in mind that there are no Mint Mobile stores, so the only place that you can purchase a Mint Mobile plan or request a Mint Mobile SIM card is online.

How do I get the best Mint Mobile deal?

Intro Plans Talk/Text 100 MB 3GB 8GB 12GB
7-Day Trial 100 texts/min. $5
3-Month Intro Unlimited $15/mo ($45 total) $20/mo ($60 total) $25/mo ($75 total)

Mint Mobile plans are so affordable; it’s easy to jump straight into a 12-month plan. But, you also want to make sure you’re getting a network that’s going to be a good fit for you and your geographical location, at the very best deal no less.

I highly recommend subscribing to Mint Mobile plans in this succession, and I’ll explain why.

Step 1:  Purchase a $5 Mint Mobile starter kit (7-day trial).

Before you cancel your current wireless plan, buy a new phone, and port your number, take the time to find out if the Mint Mobile network is going to work for you.

Mint Mobile’s starter kit comes with a 7-day trial Mint Mobile SIM card loaded with 100MB of 4G LTE data, 100 texts + 100 minutes. This lets you try out Mint Mobile’s coverage completely risk-free.

Step 2:  Sign up with a 3-month introductory Mint Mobile plan.

If Mint is right for you, move up to a 3-month introductory plan. When you sign up for a full Mint Mobile plan following a trial, they’ll also reimburse you with a $5 credit to your account.

With the 3-month intro, you get the same monthly deal as a yearly subscription, but you won’t have to pay as much upfront. The intro plan saves you money while giving you more time to test out the service without a lengthy commitment.

This is also a great time to look around for Mint Mobile coupons. Mint runs a lot of promotions, especially on their 3-month introductory prices, so be sure to browse their offers before you subscribe!

Step 3:  Subscribe to a 6-month or 12-month plan.

By now, you’ve had a lot of experience with the Mint Mobile network. If you like Mint Mobile coverage, you may be ready to commit to a long-term plan.

Keep in mind that once your three months are up, you aren’t a new user anymore and you won’t have access to Mint’s introductory prices.

That said, Mint Mobile’s 3-month renewal prices aren’t the best deal compared to longer plan options. If you want to keep with the rate that you’ve been paying, you can do so by subscribing to a 6-month or 12-month Mint Mobile plan.

What if I use up my 4G LTE data limit?

  • Mint Mobile users have unlimited access to the 3G network.
  • Additional LTE data is available in 1GB ($10) and 3GB ($20) increments.
  • The Mint Mobile carrier offers international roaming data at the same prices.

Although the average American consumer uses less than 5GB of data monthly, there is always the possibility of exceptional circumstances that cause you to reach your data limits sooner than planned. For example, maybe you spent more time away from home for one month or even traveled out of the country.

No matter how you reach your 4G LTE data allotment, Minty subscribers are happy to know they have unlimited access to the 3G network in areas where it is available, regardless of their Mint Mobile plan.

Although, you’re still able to add LTE data when you’re approaching the cap; an extra 1GB will run you $10, and another 3GB is $20. If you’re traveling outside the U.S., the Mint Mobile carrier also offers international roaming data at those same prices.

Will you take Mint Mobile plans on a test run?
