With the advent of anime TV flooding the online streaming space, Gogoanime is one of the most popular free streaming sources for fans around the world. But the website frequently migrates, and fans often embark on a quest to find a Gogoanime alternative.
Mint Mobile is one of the most compelling prepaid wireless options on the market. Mint Mobile is worth switching to.
When examining the best alternatives for Gogoanime, I tested sites for myself and consulted online reviews and forums (Gogoanime fans on Reddit were especially helpful). To ensure quality and exhaustiveness, I included a list of both free and paid alternatives to Gogoanime.
Overview of Gogoanime
Many anime enthusiasts consider Gogoanime to be the standard for free, online streaming selection. And while you can create a free account to access additional features like video bookmarking, signing up is not a requirement to view site content.
Gogoanime includes anime favorites like JoJo, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Punch Man, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, and more. Viewers can access their favorite titles by category or alphabetical order.
Is Gogoanime legal?
More than likely, Gogoanime is illegally uploading content for viewers in the United States.
Because of this, authorities do their best to track illegal URLs and shut them down. Free anime sites with questionable legality tend to migrate. While we currently found Gogoanime live at www2.gogoanime.io, the address tends to change regularly from TLDs like .ru, .io, .tv, etc.
Piracy is illegal in the United States. Technically, the viewer has no way of knowing for sure whether or not streamed content is unlawful (unless the webmaster can prove otherwise). Thus, those that upload the material are held responsible.
Is Gogoanime safe?
Most free anime sites like Gogoanime will flood you with ads, and not all of these ads are safe. You should be wary of clicking any ads from these sites.
Of the safe ads, most of them are adult/explicit ads. Frequent users often lean upon ad blocker software and VPN services to protect their computers and anonymity.
The best way to protect yourself and your computer from malware is to use a reputable site that charges you a subscription or can otherwise provide proof of its legality.
Popular free Gogoanime alternatives
While it may be that free sites use ad money to pay for the rights to stream, the chances are higher that hackers create fake ads to try to harm your computer or steal personal information. As such, use the following alternatives at your own risk to watch anime free online.
The list below includes sites with fewer ads than most. Additionally, we made sure that each was active and that playback worked. If authorities target these sites for pirated content, the website may not be live for long.
9anime’s two most significant advantages are its selection and clean interface. But the website is fraught with adult ads. As such, you may not want to give your kids access to explore available content. Like Gogoanime, you can become a member for free, but it is not required.
When testing the site, I did have redirect issues when pressing play/pause. Using keyboard shortcuts (such as the spacebar) helped me avoid this nuisance.
Because so many sites mimic KissAnime (mirror sites), I had to do some digging before locating the official KissAnime page at kissanime.ru (not kissanime.ru.com).
Playback was seamless and in high definition. I did, however, encounter more mature ads and a few popups. KissAnime encourages users to create a free account in order to address “preroll ads” (see below) preemptively. Preroll ads are those that require you to click or view before the video plays.
Anime Freak TV
Anime Freak TV is another free resource with impressive variety. I enjoyed not having to deal with preroll ads, but there were still a decent number of popups and adult ads throughout the website.
MyAnimeList (free version)
MyAnimeList is an excellent site for both free anime shows and movies as well as robust fan forums. Because MyAnimeList operates legally, you will not have access to all content without a paid membership, and you will experience video ads amid playback (similar to YouTube or Hulu).
That said, free content selection is adequate, and you don’t have to wade through explicit ads. Additionally, anime fans also have access to MANGA graphic novels.
I found AnimeShow.tv very similar to Kissanime, except with fewer adult ads covering each page. The selection is top-notch, but you will have to deal with preroll ads before launching playback.
KickAssAnime has a slightly less visual appeal, but it works great. Aside from preroll ads, I was able to watch a few different episodes in HD.
However, I was dissatisfied with the amount of subbed (English speakers recording over Japanese dialogue) content. As long as you don’t mind watching English subtitles, you will be able to enjoy all the major anime shows and movies.
Best paid Gogoanime alternatives
To avoid the risks associated with piracy and malware, paying to stream your favorite anime shows and movies is the safest approach. If you have a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, you already have access to some anime content.
However, generic streaming providers don’t often carry the most extensive selection of anime shows and movies. Our list below includes websites that specialize in providing as much anime variety as possible.
While Crunchyroll does have a free version, I was able to find very few anime shows and movies available without a premium membership. Also, full-length content is frequently interrupted by ads.
With a premium subscription, you can add dubbing/subbing to most videos, enjoy more variety of full-length content, and also enjoy access via mobile devices. Particularly for anime movie selection, Crunchyroll Premium is one of the best.
If you’ve not signed up for Crunchyroll Premium in the past, you can enjoy a free two-week trial before paying $7.99/month.
Funimation is more than an anime streaming provider. The website is also a fan store with collectibles, anime apparel, and more.
Like Crunchyroll, Funimation allows new members a two-week trial before paying $7.99/month. As a paying member, you enjoy unlimited access to all anime shows and movies, plus free shipping for store orders more than $20.
Of all the Gogoanime alternatives listed here, Funimation has the largest anime inventory. And the best part is that it is confirmed 100% safe and legal for viewers in the United States.
HIDIVE has the lengthiest free trial (a full month) of any other anime site. Memberships are $4.99/month (or $47.99 for the year).
HIDIVE members receive access to a decent selection of anime shows and movies, plus simulcasts (anime episodes streaming within 24 hours of when a Japanese network broadcasts the show/movie).
Recap: Gogoanime alternatives
Anime fans from 20 years ago would not be able to conceive of what fans can access today. What was formerly exclusive content for Japanese viewers and big-spending western enthusiasts is now online for global audiences everywhere.
If you’re unsatisfied with Gogoanime, I hope that my list above helps you find a streaming service that you like. As a reminder, the best way to ensure your computer’s safety is to verify that the site you stream from is legal.
And if you are ever unsure that the website you’re using owns a license to stream, you would do best to invest in a paid subscription.
